Journey to the West dev update
Adapting all 108 chapters of Journey to the West into an action RPG, solo, using only prompts as my interface to Bitmagic. Half my time goes into fixing the engine, the other half into teaching the AI to generate chapters autonomously.
As I posted before, I'm working on this super ambitious game project using Bitmagic. My goal is to adopt a novel, 108-chapter Journey To The West, into an action RPG. This would traditionally take years, and a big team. My only user interface to the development is prompting, so everything you see here has been generated by writing a prompt and letting the AI do the legwork.
I'm trying to find ways to use AI as much as possible but obviously I still need to be the judge of what is and what isn't good for the story and the gameplay. One thing I've learned so far (and this should not be a surprise) is that while the AI can do a lot in the technical implementation side, there's still a very important role for the human on the creative side.
This is a research project, an attempt to push the limits of what Bitmagic can do. I'm spending about half of the time fixing and improving the engine, and the other half goes into working on the actual game. Essentially, I'm trying to teach the AI how to create a game like this so that I could get it to generate some of the chapters autonomously.
It's fascinating to say the least, and I'm learning so much. I have this running on my laptop and phone, happy to show it if we happen to bump into each other during the GDC week! In the meanwhile, enjoy the trailer. The music was made in Suno: "Chinese song in Finnish symphony metal style" 🔥
